2020 Gear Bag
Updated: Feb 4
2020 has been a crazy year for us all. Plans were set and have been changed and changed again more times than I can count. Stephanie and I have re-doubled our efforts to provide valuable content to our subscribers and provide valuable content.
I've been asked a few times what type of gear we use to gather some of our material, below is a breakdown of what we use and how we use it.
Our gear as of November 2020
Our main Vlog and photography camera is a Sony A6400. This camera has been a great addition to our gear bag and is a camera I would recommend to everyone. It is very affordable ($999), has all the features you would need to shoot great landscape, portrait, and street photography. It offers many videography settings as well like fast and slow motion, as well as the ability to shoot timelapse footage. It is incredibly easy to use and even offers a forward facing camera which makes it super easy to shoot VLOG videos or take selfies.
Sony camera also have a respectable range of E-Mount lenses. Not quite as many as Nikon or Canon but between Sony's lineup and third party contributors there is no lack of options when it comes to lenses.

The Canon G7X is my everyday, on the road, need something that will fit in my pocket vlog camera. The camera is extremely capable and can also be used for street photography, but given that it does not allow for interchangeable lenses you are very limited in what it is capable of. It also only shoots in 12megapixels, as opposed to the 40 megapixels offered by the A6400. This camera also offers a forward facing screen making it perfect for travel vlogging. The Canon G7X also offers one of the fastest autofocus lenses on the market in this category. It can lock on an capture a photo faster than any other camera I have used up to now.
The convenience of having such a small camera with as many features as the Canon G7X make this camera a force to be reckoned with.

I use only a few lenses currently.
The Sony E-Mount f/3.5-6.3 24mm-240mm is a fantastic all around camera. I use this for everyday vlogging and photography. The 24mm setting is great for up close selfie style vlogging while the 240mm allows me to get up close and personal with distance objects. I use this lens every day - https://amzn.to/2TW7Yga
The Sony E-Mount f/3.5-5.6 18mm-135mm was a default lens that came as part of a package deal. I had very very low expectations for this lens but it has proven to be a real trooper. It is not an expert at anything, but it is extremely light way, very good for up close shots and can get reasonably close to distant objects. For me, the 24mm-240mm does everything this one is capable of, but this lens will likely be considerably cheaper. - https://amzn.to/34UJ6eR
The Sony E-Mount f/4 10mm-18mm is my only fisheye lens and it absolutely perfect for very large landscape shots. It is extremely sharp and creates very large feeling photos. It is not great for night photography due to its small aperture but in good lighting, this is a great lens. - https://amzn.to/2TR4Ulg
The Sony E-Mount F/1.8 85mm is one of my favorite lenses. It is incredible for night photography due to it's large aperture, is extremely light-weight, and is reasonably priced. The downside of this lens is that it is fixed distance. This is not great for tight spaces, especially if you use a crop sensor camera, but it is excellent for portraits and night photography. - https://amzn.to/3kZjenO
DJI Mavic Pro is a must have addition to your bag. Now, this exact model may not work for you, but DJI Mavics are absolutely incredible drones. This model is a little old and the technology is slightly behind the times, but it is absolutely essential in my gear bag. If you want to really capture an environment and make good videos, you are going to be severely restricted if you don't have a drone - https://amzn.to/2TW7kiK
Rode VideoMic Pro, this Mic is the latest addition to my gear bag and it has been absolutely awesome. I've only ever use inbuilt microphones and the difference in clarity and the available options is unparalleled. If you intend on shooting anywhere but a perfectly quiet studio, you absolutely need to purchase a microphone, and this one is worth every penny. - https://amzn.to/3mR1QlF
